Community Hospital-Fairfax to Build New Hospital
Construction of
the NEW Community Hospital-Fairfax 2008-2009
On July 18, 2008, shovels turned dirt from the construction site of our soon-to-be
new home. From that day on, the landscape on Highway 59 in Fairfax has been changing!
Read on for a month-by-month guide to our construction project.
July/August, 2010
The final weeks of construction
are taking place during July and August. Kiewit Building Group intends to
turn over the building "substantially complete" to Community Hospital-Fairfax in
the first weeks of August. In the meantime, electricians are working hard
to complete the wiring, floor coverings are being finished and ceiling tiles are
being hung. In coming weeks, a brick garden will be completed as well as landscaping.
Signage will also be installed in early August. CH-F continues to make plans
for a Dedication Ceremony on September 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. as well as the move which
will take place September 10-13. CH-F will be accepting patients at the new
facility on September 13, 2010.

May/June, 2010
In May and June of 2010, painting in the patient
wing will be completed. Floor coverings and cabinetry was also started. The canopy at the front entrance was complete which
will allow for patients to stay protected as they enter the building during inclement
weather. The overhang to the MRI dock was also completed. Dry wall was completed
in the entire hospital. Plans for signage and landscaping have been made as well
as final decisions on furniture for the new hospital. On May 14, 140 members of
the public toured the new facility. Staff has begun making more and more frequent
visits to the site as they plan to receive patients in September.
Plans are being made to move the hospital in September
of 2010. The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony on September 3, 2010.
Please plan to visit
www.fairfaxmed.com frequently to learn
more about the move. Details will also be posted on the Community Hospital-Fairfax
Facebook page.

April, 2010
As of April, many rooms and spaces have begun to
take shape inside the new hospital. The patient room bathrooms are being laid with
tile and contractors are installing sinks. Patient room head walls have been delivered
and painters have began coating the walls.
There are approximately 50 contractors working daily
on the project. Dry wall is almost complete and the ceiling tile grids will
be installed soon. Weather permitting, sidewalks and additional concrete
pads may be poured very soon. We will see completion of the project in just six
months!

December, 2009
December brought more than just snow at the construction site. Interior framing was installed for surgical and patient rooms and is almost complete. After the framing is done, drywall is scheduled to begin the last week of January. Other important steps, such as plumbing lines and the heating and air conditioning systems are currently being installed. The fire sprinkler system is complete. This month, department directors and supervisors took a tour of the facility. The group was the first to have lunch in what will eventually be the hospital’s cafeteria.

November, 2009
The interior is taking shape! Framing
for patient rooms can be seen in the inside of the new hospital. Also visible are
the overhead electrical, plumbing, HVAC and sprinkler system pipes and ducts. As
planned, window installment will be completed by the end of the month, allowing
for interior work to continue during the winter. Sealing off the outside means some
welcomed heating for the construction workers. Kiewit Construction Group reported
that during the year since the project began, there have been no accidents on the
construction for Kiewit Building Group or the subcontractors. Click on the link
below to view pictures of the hospital’s roof, which is near completion as
well as a picture of the interior’s progression.

October, 2009:
Construction of the exterior was a top priority this month. The end of the month
will bring the completion of the roof and window installation. After the exterior
is complete, approximately 52,000 square feet of concrete will be poured for the
interior floor.

August/September 2009:
The exterior of the building began to take shape in late summer. During August and
September, 1,200 bricks were laid per day to create the exterior walls. A total
of 20,000 bricks were used to build the outside of the hospital.

July, 2009:
The access roads and concrete for the parking lot were completed in July, as well
as the main entrance off of Highway 59. Many important steps were completed that
were not visible at the construction site. The architects framed a “mock up room”
where they set up furniture and equipment to lay out a visual of the future patient
rooms in the hospital. The purpose of this room was for the hospital staff to evaluate
the layout of furniture and equipment in an effort to better serve the patients.
Work on sewer and water lines began in mid-July. Man holes and underground concrete
work were completed as well.

Spring 2009:
Fairfax boasted its very own “pyramid”
on the hillside in early 2009. This mound of dirt on the site was used to compact
the foundation where the hospital will be built. After the surcharge was cleared
away, a smoother, flatter area allowed us to envision the layout for the new facility.
Electrical lines and other necessary utilities connections were some of the first
changes seen at the site. During this time, the hospital staff worked many hours
with the architects to define the interior look of our new home.
